This project involved a lot of fabrication of metal parts. I found that prototyping with laser cut baltic birch first was much cheaper and more forgiving than going right into plasma cut steel. This piece was a mount for the undersized rear disc brake that came with the hub motor. When building an electric motorcycle there are basically two options for motor placement: where the engine originally was (mid drive), or in the rear wheel (hub motor). Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, I went with a hub motor because it gave me more battery space and was more simple.
I went with a QS273 hub motor, QS is a well regarded Chinese motor company whose motors are pretty reliable. They severely under-rate their motors, this one is rated at 8000w but people frequently push them past double that with no issues.
